The Orford Hotel in Warrington, an architectural gem from around 1908, showcases the artistry of Wright & Hamlyn, designed for the Greenall Whitley Brewery Company. This historic building, known for its Tudor Gothic style, stands out with its buff terracotta facings, red brick detailing, and a Westmorland slate roof. The building’s structure features prominent gable and ridge stacks and a unique courtyard layout, occupying a scenic corner on Gorsey Lane.
The main eastern façade, fronting Gorsey Lane, is a two-story display of grandeur with slightly asymmetrical design, projecting bays, and Gothic tracery. The windows on the upper floor bear Tudor-style arches and are both transomed and mullioned, adding a medieval touch. The north side of the building is notable for its canted bays and intricate Gothic detailing, while the south side, featuring a single-story addition, reflects simpler brickwork. The rear of the building combines sash and mullioned windows, retaining much of the original charm.
Inside, The Orford Hotel preserves its historical character, including a spacious main bar with etched windows displaying the brewery monogram, tiled Art Nouveau accents, and original fixed seating. Despite some modifications, the original layout remains mostly intact, allowing visitors to step back in time while enjoying modern comforts.
Managed by Luxe Hospitality Group, The Orford Hotel has recently seen tasteful renovations that respect its historical character while enhancing its appeal for contemporary patrons.
